Images that SELL
by David Bigwood
(former columnist on freelancing for Freelance Photographer magazine UK)
No, this small e-book won't make you millions nor are editors throughout the world waiting with bated breath for you to send them some of your masterpieces. In spite of what hundreds of writers are promising that is not how freelance photography works.
What will work, if you have the talent and passion for photography, is sheer hard grind, a realisation that rejection is part of the business and a determination to keep getting up after you are knocked down time after time.
Maybe that is a bit harsh but it is better to be that way than to be sucked in by, as I saw on a pitch page recently for a book on freelancing, 'the world needs photographers' as if there aren't enough of us trying to eke out a living as it is!
Anyhow, back to this little book. It shows some of the images that I have been successful in selling to publications and is intended to show how it's not always the pretty or the out of the ordinary images that make it on to the printed page.
I have picked out over 30 images and told you a bit about their history. I know that I have benefited from studying the work of other photographers who have made sales — not, I hasten to add, to copy their images but to see the type of image that has taken an editor's eye.
I believe that my book will be of use to
any would-be freelance photographer.
