Starting Nature Photography

The natural world provides photographers with a multitude of subjects and the number of books available seems limitless. Last year I noted Niall Benvie’s Outdoor Photography Masterclass, Boyd Norton’s Outdoor Digital Photography Handbook, George Lepp’s Wildlife Photography and Ralph Lee Hopkins’ Nature Photography. As is often the case in these type of books, all of which give very useful and practical information, many of the images are of the big cats and other animals found in the wild in Africa or the wildlife abundant in the Americas and while these pictures are often quite dramatic they are not the sort of subjects that those of us who are based in Australia will come across outside zoos. The exception in the four books mentioned above is Niall Benvie who tends to leave his native Scotland and head to eastern Europe but that, too, is not the hop, step and a jump for us as it is for him.

Fortunately, wherever you live, nature exists; even in the middle of a major city. In Australia we have our own abundant wildlife so while we cannot compete with shots of lions or polar bears, we can provide images of kangaroos and koalas; not, I hasten to add, wild in the major cities as some from overseas would have you believe.

While this book is written with Australia in mind, most of what is included is applicable to nature photography anywhere.
